Ford Chooses Pirelli For 2003 Suv And Pickups

Excursion 4×2 and Super Duty F-250 and F-350 Models Will Run on
Scorpion STRs

ROME – Georgia, December 20th, 2002 – Excursion, Ford’s
bigger-than-life SUV that ” does it all,” leads the full-size SUV
brigade with class-leading interior volume and cargo space. And now
it also leads in tires with Pirelli radials having been chosen by
Ford as an original equipment fitment on 2003 models. In addition,
Ford’s Super Duty F-250 and F-350 fullsize pickups, in both 4×2 and
4×4 configurations will be available with Pirellis for 2003.
Powertrains are at the heart of doing what SUVs and trucks are
designed to do.
Available engines include the 5.4-liter V8 and 6.8.liter V10
gas-fueled Tritons and an all-new, stump-pulling, 32-valve,
6.0-liter, turbocharged, Power Stroke V8 diesel.
The Power Stroke engine is the new diesel benchmark with the
highest torque and horsepower in its class: an unbelievable
560lb-ft @ 2000 rpm and 325 bhp at 3300.
Every Excursion comes standard with a Class IV hitch receiver and a
heavy-duty towing package. Properly equipped Excursion can tow up
to 11,000 lb.
Coping with all that torque and towing potential calls for a rugged
high-performance tire, and that’s where Pirelli enters the picture.
True to its slogan ” Power Is Nothing Without Control,” Pirelli’s
new Scorpion STRs will fill the Excursion’s and Super Duty pickups’
wheel wells with LT265/75R16 radials. The Scorpion STRs will be
available with either black sidewalls or raised outline white
letters.
Long acknowledged as a world leader in high-performance radial
technology, Pirelli
developed the world’s largest first ultra-low-profile, steel
radial, the P7, in 1974; followed by the ” Plus- One Concept” in
1975; the world’s first high -performance, all-season radial, the
P77, in 1981; and the ultimate-high-performance tire for the
world’s fastest supercars, the legendary Pirelli P Zero in
1987.

Pirelli OE on Ford Trucks
So, it is no surprise that Pirelli is at the forefront of the
development of high-performance
radials for the fastest growing segment of the U.S. tire market -
today’s truck and SUV fitments.
The ” Scorpion by Pirelli” range was introduced in 1994 with the
launch of the Scorpion I, America’s first asymmetrical, reversible
light-truck tire. The next year the Scorpion A/S appeared, bringing
with it outstanding all-season capabilities, followed by the
Scorpion S/T and its fitment sizes up to 18 inches. In early 1997
the Scorpion A/T was introduced for allterrain use, offering
performance for both on- and off-road driving. A year later the
Scorpion Zero, the thoroughbred, low-profile sport tire designed
for light trucks and SUVs and available with Z, V and H speed
ratings, entered the market.
The Pirelli Scorpion STRs destined for 2003 Ford Excursions and
Super Duty pickups
will be manufactured in Pirelli’s factory in Brazil. The technical
specification of the STR includes the combination of steel belts
and nylon wrap for which Pirelli is famous, being the core
technology behind Pirelli’s high-speed performance tires.
Tires will be shipped to Ford assembly plants in Louisville,
Kentucky and Cuautitlan,
Mexico and vehicles produced will be distributed in the U.S.,
Canada and Mexico.

Pirelli Tire North America specializes in the manufacture and
marketing of highperformance car, light truck and motorcycle tires

the Audi presents Petit Le Mans and 12 other spectator events. The
facility is busy more than 340 days per year, including the Panoz
Racing School and Audi Driving Experience.
Sebring is home to the oldest sports car race in North America -
the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring that annually opens the ALMS
season. The 12 Hours of Sebring celebrated its 50th anniversary
earlier this year.

The Panoz Racing School, based at Road Atlanta with operations
at Sebring, Mosport and Texas Motor Speedway, is one of the top
road racing schools in the world. It is the only school that uses a
purpose-built racecar – the Panoz GT-RA. In addition to one-, two-
and three-day racing schools, the Panoz Racing School also conducts
corporate outings and fleet driver training. The Audi Driving
Experience is part of the Panoz Racing School, but uses Audi A4s on
street-legal Pirelli tires to teach car control skills.

Catalunya Rally

Two different types of asphalt is the ‘technical identity
card’ of the Rallye Catalunya, round 4 of the World Rally
Championship
(March 22-24). Also significant is the weather
which, at this time of year, can rise to quite warm
temperatures
during the day after cold or humid conditions in
the morning with the possibility of fog. The difference in these
conditions and surfaces requires Pirelli to prepare a range of
tyres specifically developed for this event.

‘The Stages around Tarragona,’ says Pirelli Rally Manager
Fiorenzo Brivio
, ‘are run on abrasive asphalt similar to
that in Corsica. There we will use harder compound
tyres for increased durability. The stages around Vic, more
to the north, are smoother and more slippery. They also
become quite dirty as they will be used twice during the
event. For these we have made specific evolutions which interest
the RS-type (in compound 50) for the dry surfaces and the RE
(compound 70) for damp and wet roads, to guarantee greater
adhesion
on slippery surfaces.’

These are not the only reasons that characterise the PZero
tyre choice for Spain. The final consideration is the
nature of the roads themselves. ‘The Stages in Spain,’ says
Brivio, ‘are generally wider than the other asphalt rallies
in the championship. That means that the cars will handle
differently in big lateral drifts that place different stresses on
tyres and highlight different handling characteristics of the cars.
We have adjusted the structure of the tyres specifically for
this reason without compromising either the tyres’
performance or reliability. Our low-profile tyre has minimal
‘flex’
and maximum durability.

Evolutions For Smooth And Slippery Surfaces

The asphalt of the Catalunya Rally changes clearly between the
Stages of individual Legs. Those of Leg 1, towards Tarragona,
introduce abrasive asphalt; those of Legs 2 and 3, around Vic, are
contested on a smooth and slippery surface. This requires a
PZero range decidedly specialised with the objective of
guaranteeing the best performances on both types of surface
and all possible weather variations.
Ford and Subaru have chosen the RS and RE patterns, two well known
options, and designed specifically for this event after extensive
testing in the region. All will be fitted with the EMI
anti-deflation system.

From Dry Surface To Humid

RS (Size 225/650-18)
Type A tyre for dry asphalt
Compound options: 50 (with evolution), 70 and 90
Description For all dry surface conditions and also slightly damp
asphalt. Step 50 is the base choice for the rally; the evolution
version is aimed at the particularly smooth and slippery surfaces
in the Vic region. Step 90 is designed for use with low
temperatures or a damp or dirty surface.

From High Humidity To Wet

RE (Size 225/650-18)
Type Intermediate tyre for damp to wet surfaces
Compound options: 70 (with evolution) and 90
Description A very versatile tyre, designed for damp to wet
surfaces. Step 70 with evolution is ideal for the smooth and
slippery Stages around Vic. The very soft 90 step can tackle rain
and low temperatures. The RE tyre can be further hand cut for heavy
rain or where there is a lot of standing water on the Stages.

Pirelli’s Catalunya Record

Two of Pirelli’s Catalunya wins could hardly have been more
“Spanish”. Carlos Sainz’s two wins since the rally joined the World
Championship both came on Pirelli tyres, the first with Toyota and
the second with Subaru. Sainz’s second win, in 1995, came amid
great controversy for that was the year when “team orders” were
imposed to ensure Subaru’s first of three consecutive World
Championships for Manufacturers. Sainz’s previous win on this event
was in his title-winning season of 1992 and the previous year
marked Armin Schwarz’s only WRC event win.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 EVENTS

Monte Carlo 18-20 January Asphalt/snow/ice
The perfect start to the season for Pirelli with an historic
victory going to the Subaru of Tommi Makinen and with four cars
fitted with Pirelli PZero tyres in the top six places. The rally
was run almost entirely without snow and saw a superb result the RS
tyre in the level 9 ‘thermal’ compound that gives maximum
performance in conditions of dry asphalt with only a little
ice.

Sweden* 1-3 February Snow/ice/gravel
Unfortunately early snow turned quickly to mud but already the
Subarus of Makinen and Solberg had retired with engine problems and
McRae’s Ford suffered a heavy penalty, breaking a wheel after
hitting a rock. Sainz 3rd in the other Ford was the best result
although again the competition showed the positive step forward
made by the PZero studded tyres.

Corsica* 8-10 March Asphalt
A mixture of dry asphalt on the first day and then wet or damp
roads for the next two days provided a difficult test for tyre
choices. However the latest evolutions of the PZero asphalt range
proved to be exceptionally competitive in all conditions.
Unfortunately Makinen and McRae crashed out the event but Pirelli’s
asphalt performance brought fastest times for both Ford and
Subaru.
