Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha) overcame some early setbacks in qualifying to take his tenth pole of his remarkable rookie WSB season, heading a front row of Lascorz, Sofuoglu and Crutchlow’s only championship rival, Eugene Laverty.
The man many insiders tipped for his first race win of 2009 this weekend, Joan Lascorz, duly took his longed-for victory, and it was Kawasaki’s first race win of the 2009 season. He deserved his win, having led every lap bar one. So far Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki riders have won races on the Pirelli DIABLO SUPERCORSA tyres and today Cal Crutchlow also beat the previous lap record by over a second. His 1’41.407 was completed on the 14th lap. The planned 22-lap WSS race was shortened to 19 laps after an oil spill brought out the red flags, with put Crutchlow second in the race, and Sofuoglu third - Kawasaki/Yamaha/Honda. With Laverty crashing and restarting to finish 13, the championship advantage for Crutchlow is 19 points, swinging things in Crutchlow’s favour once again.
